If you are struggling- well done!! I am so pleased and I hope you are ready for some more rewarding and celebrating.
Why should you be celebrating the fact that you are struggling to get through 21 days of creating a new habit? Why focus on the feeling that it is hard and you don't want to do it anymore?
Because this means the new habit is taking hold. You are winning. All your work and effort over the past 2 weeks is beginning to have a positive effect.
This discordance you are feeling means that you are trying to work out where this new habit fits in. It means that the new way of thinking, of being, of doing is carving it's niche and making itself at home. The discontent you are feeling is the old habit, grumbling away as it packs its bags, ready to leave.
So don't consider this time and feeling a setback. Consider it something to be celebrated as the challenge is working and you are doing so well!
Continue the Review and Reward process, but now pile on the celebration part of it and do more of what's going right. If it helps, picture your old habit packing its bags ready to leave and your new habit settling down and getting comfortable in the armchair.
Think about what this new habit needs to stay in that armchair- concentrate on the new habit. Ignore the old one- its on its way out the door, it doesn't need your focus. The next few days of the challenge is really about embedding this new habit into your life, making it as happy to be there as the old habit was.
If it helps, think about the new habit and what it would change from its armchair position. Using the analogy, what would the wallpaper (your new world view) look like?: colour, pattern, feel. What other furniture (thoughts, actions) would it surround itself with?
It may seem a slightly silly exercise but what you are doing is entrenching the new habit into your life, into its surroundings. You are changing the way you view things, from the point of this new habit reference.
Think how different your life is now. How much more different is it going to be when you are at Day 21? How is this new habit changing and challenging the way you think about things?
