The Value in Values

It has been a week of looking at values. Values are something that are often over-looked as intrinsic and therefore, unchanging. Quite the opposite. Have you ever felt discontent or unhappy; maybe lacking direction or felt something is not quite right and you can't explain why? It could be that you are involved in something that is against your set of values and you are subconsciously fighting your actions.

Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They determine your priorities and they are the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it or not.

Values are your core beliefs and are an expression of who you are, what you stand for and how you conduct yourself. They are a reference point and anchor for your thoughts, actions and behaviours.

Values are things such as: charity, belonging, justice, practicality or independence. They tend to be reasonably stable but may change as you progress through life and your understanding of yourself changes, or circumstances change and what you want from life changes.

By identifying your values- the real priorities in your life, you'll be more easily able to determine the best direction for you and the future.  When you align your actions, thoughts and behaviours to your values, you find that decision-making is easier and that there is little conflict or discord in your life. Similarly, when you do something that is out of line with your values, you will feel significant disharmony and discontent.

Regularly evaluating and reviewing your values, especially around times of transition or upheaval and change, will help you to maintain an inner balance- knowing you are making decisions true to your core beliefs.
