The View From Where I stand

Taking a walk with my little one is, I have realised, one of my least appreciated regular activities so I am pleased to be able to add it to my 'August Break: The Little Things In Life' photo series.

Yesterday we went out to the local woods, about 1/2 hour walk away. She gets to ride in the buggy for a bit and then we park it and go for a wander along the paths in the woods. This occasion she insisted on taking her 'baby' with us, which was fine until I suggested we leave her with the buggy while we went walking. What was I thinking?! So baby came too.

We saw cows and butterflies, wild flowers and blackberries ready to pick (my horror at seeing the first clear signs of Autumn was palpable!). We discussed which animal might have dug the hole we saw; debated whether the sun would stay out for the duration of the trip. We stopped and looked at beetles on the path and tried to see the bird making a racket in the branches overhead.

I made a comment recently on Twitter and Facebook that if you want to learn mindfulness from an expert, you need to spend a day with a toddler. You have no choice but to slow down and be involved in the details of everything. It  was a delightful and very timely lesson for me and I was lucky to have such a brilliant and accomplished teacher as my daughter; it helps that she is wonderful company anyway, it is never a hardship. When I am with her, it serves me well to remember to look at the world through her eyes, I am certainly a better person for it.
