A Desperate Mum's Guide to...

... getting vegetables into your children.

Not eating veges just seems to be another thing that is incredibly exasperating and something else we can spend hours worrying about with our toddlers. So here are a few ideas to help ease the worry and get them consuming the nutrition they need- sometimes without them knowing it!

  • cook with lean mince and grate carrot and courgette into it, regardless of the recipe! Both have reasonably neutral flavour so as not to have an impact on the taste of the rest of the ingredients.
  • use pureed veg pots and pouches you get in the supermarket as 'special sauces' for sausages, fish fingers and chicken goujons. My little one thinks she's getting a treat and I don't mind how much she has, knowing it's all veges and fruits!
  • cut raw veg into different shapes- they don't need to be elaborate sculptures even triangles can be enough to get them interested.
  • offer dips like tzatziki or hoummus for them to smother offending veges with.
  • offer veg alongside fruit so there is less of a separation between the two and it is seen as just as natural to eat both.
  • try social eating. Toddlers automatically react to what is happening around them and copying is a natural form of learning at this age. Eating what another toddler is enjoying could be just the starting point they need, even just to try something new.
  • remind yourself of how big a toddler's stomach is- about the size of their fist. You might be expecting your toddler to consume more veg than what they need.
  • keep trying. Taste preferences change so keep offering veg to your little ones but don't force the issue. Make sure they try it but leave it be if they reject it.

I would love to hear of your tricks and tips on how you get veg into your toddler!

If you are still concerned your toddler isn't getting what they need nutritionally, there are natural wholefood alternatives available to boost their nutritional intake in the meantime.  Find some more information here.
