This is such a busy time of year it is easy to get lost in the run-up to Christmas - anticipation and excitement along with all the organisation and preparation. It can be quite manic and stressful.
But if we take a leaf, literally out of the natural world’s rhythms, we would see Autumn as a time to take stock, slow down and prepare ourselves for the coming winter months. It is a time for surrounding ourselves in warmth and comfort, allowing ourselves to evaluate our present situation and enjoy the bounty that surrounds us. Sometimes we forget to look at what we do have amidst trying to achieve what we haven’t got.
If I was to compare seasons with cities I would label Summer as Las Vegas - bright, colourful, brash, and exciting. So it is no wonder that there is an element of sadness to see it go with all it offers. Consider however what replaces it: Autumn. A subtle season, colourful still but with more depth; a season of bounty and harvest. A season to gather about you those things that hold value and meaning.
Finding the Abundance in our Lives
Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers, we more than gain in fruits.
Samuel Butler
In the world of coaching and self development there can be a large emphasis on moving forward, working towards that which you want to achieve; however in any good coaching process, there will be a period of recognising the abundance in our lives, in taking stock and acknowledging what we have that is good and positive and healthy.
Taking time to be appreciative of what we have, of being thankful for the gifts we are surrounded by allows us to change perspective- what we have often becomes enough and if you believe in the natural laws, then the more you are grateful and happy for what you have, the more you will receive.
Tips and Hints on Life Inventory…
A bit like Santa’s list, this inventory is also a list of gifts, not to give but of what you already have. There is huge benefit in being aware of what you have in your life and subsequently appreciating it. What better time as the nights draw in and you look for comfort and warmth, to surround yourself with the abundance of your life.
Material Things
- What have you surrounded yourself with that you love and are proud to possess?
- What have you worked hard for or is a true reflection of you?
Friends and Family
- Who do you have in your life that enhances who you are and what you do?
- Consider those who have a specific purpose for you- the friend that makes you laugh could be different to the friend who you confide in but both have value in your life
- Consider family members- we can’t often choose our blood ties and some relationships can be strained but try to look more at what you value in them and how they enhance our lives
Self
- How do you look at life? How do you enhance who you are and what you do?
- What do you do that makes you happy?
- What is it about you, your attitude, your outlook on life that is a gift- to yourself and others?
