Everywhere I turn these days, it is all about woman. From the universal shift of the planets towards the Era of Woman*, to recent award-winning film producers, to the lovely ladies gathered in a friend’s kitchen- there is a feeling of empowerment; a feeling of change and evolution; a feeling of developing potential and strength.
I’ve read about it economic manuals, in psychology texts, in blogs and on non-fiction shelves. It’s on the news: from the politics in Burma; to the economies of the UAE and Australia; change is in the air and it takes a very definite female form. This is not to say there will be a mass eradication of the male being. No, this is more of a shift towards the female way of being: good leadership is now seen as taking strength from such feminine characteristics as relational intelligence, empathy, and collaboration. World politics are now leaning towards a more long-term, holistic view of decision-making. It is less of the immediate cut-throat, 'act now, deal with the repercussions later' mentality and more about nurturing and developing what we have for future benefit. It’s becoming about the big, whole view rather than the immediate in front of your face picture. You could say the time is coming that the world is beginning to realise, as women know, there is more to the fridge than what you see in front of you.
Now is the time that women are beginning to realise there is feminine strength on a global scale; that the world we want to see can become reality through our own efforts; change for our good is at our finger tips and from what I’ve been witnessing in my own social and professional sphere, the change is now.
Historically the way of being in the world, of politics and economics, of leadership and power, has been dominated by Man and male characteristics: power, fearlessness, individuality, autonomy and independence. That has served us to this point but the future is one of increasing interconnectedness, and the complexity of diverse relationships that come with that.
This developing future belongs to those with a completely different set of characteristics. Those people who utilise feminine characteristics, both male and female, are those who will flourish in this new world: those who are creators and empathisers; who can see meaning within situations and relationships; who are able to see a holistic view of the world and those that inhabit it- business world, political world, economic world, environmental world.
Previously these attributes and those that provided them, more obviously women, have been subjugated, dismissed and marginalised. Now, however, it is becoming very clear that these qualities are what the world’s leading change-makers and leaders are striving to bring to their decision-making and organisations.
Now more than ever it means that women are empowered to share these attributes with the world and to be strong in their convictions. Women are hearing their own voices, supporting their own ideas and visions and are coming together to see success for each other in a completely collaborative and inclusive way.
I’ve seen it happening and am tremendously excited to be a part of an amazing network of talented, strong, vibrant, sympathetic, courageous, smart, intelligent women. From what I have seen in my small corner of the world, of the success and change brought by a few to many, the Era of Woman bodes well for the future.
‘If ever the world sees a time when women shall come together purely for the good of humanity, it will be a power such as the world has never seen.’
Matthew Arnold
