A Happy Person

A happy person is not a person in a certain set of circumstances, but rather a person with a certain set of attitudes.

 ~Hugh Downs

This adage has been proven in so many circumstances and in so many research studies.

Researchers have found that people who overall have a happy attitude are more likely to be healthy than those who do not have the positive mindset. Also that people who have a positive attitude are usually are better at handling stress and when problems occur are better at handling the situation. They are better at calming a fraught or distressing situation. They also tend to have better immune systems and therefore, to be sick less often. They also have a higher self esteem and are usually confident people.

We then have a certain energy or ‘vibe’ that we show to the world. The energy, feelings, and attitude we put out there, in turn affects the people around us.  By having a positive attitude, people feel good being around you and you attract positive people to your friendship circle. By being surrounded by this attitude of happiness and positivity, you will find it easier and easier to live a happier and more confident life.

You know the people who just seem to have it all. They have a successful life, whatever form that may take. They are happy and then something lucky happens to them, you wonder why them and not you? But is it luck? Or is it about your attitude or theirs?

The way we view the world has often more to do with our luck than the actual ‘lucky’ circumstances. Is it really ‘bad luck’ that you were made redundant because you are an ‘unlucky’ person or through the eyes of a person with a positive attitude, has it created opportunity to re-train or relocate or change direction?

In current times, it is easy to see why people can struggle to keep this choice of attitude. It is easy enough to be brought down to rock bottom just by reading newspaper headlines or watching the news.  Surely it’s not enough just to ‘be positive’? Isn’t that a superficial, not-living-in-the-real-world attitude that doesn’t apply to normal circumstances where sometimes it can feel a struggle getting through the day?

It could be argued however: which would you rather choose? To struggle through the day with a ‘realist’ attitude, depressed and saddened knowing that there is war and natural disaster and poverty all around us.  Or choose to try and be present in each moment, to look for the best we can offer the world and be grateful for small gifts we encounter on our journey?  We know that having a positive attitude not only allows us to enjoy life more, it can improve our health and relationships with others so why would we choose anything different?
